Pots of evidence : Using artefacts to find out about the past
The children were given photographs of Greek pots and asked to look very carefully at the scenes depicted. They had to describe what they saw and then try to guess what event was being shown.
Read what they say! They had some really good ideas:

"Six women are fetching water from a fountain. Four have pots on their head and the other two are filling jars. The water comes out of a fountain. The bit that the water comes from is shaped like a lion's head and made of stone". Megan "There are three ladies in the picture. One is sitting in a chair putting make up on. Another one is putting on a necklace and the last one is looking in a mirror. I think they are getting ready for a party." Caitlin "I can see men playing javelin and dancing. They are squeezing wet handkerchiefs over each other. They are black and bare with red beards I think the Olympic Games are happening and the men are throwing the javelin and competing in the pole vault. One of their assistants is cooling them down with water." Jonathan |

"There are two men fighting each other. One has a kind of spotty skin as a type of armour. He fights with a shield. He also has a coloured plume on his helmet. The other man has a shield and a spear and he fights in shining black. His helmet covers his whole face and a beady bright eye shines out of the eyepiece on his helmet. My Guess is that they are either fighting in a tournament or one is a hero and the other is a villain." Daniel "A man is sitting down on a stool and there in front of him is a table. He seems very serious and looks as if he is focused on something. He seems to be cutting something with a special round-bladed knife. He is bald with a beard and he doesn't have many clothes on. I think he is making lots of shoes from leather because I can see he has hung them up near the ceiling. " Josh |
