GILSLAND POSTCARDS

The Iron Well

Iron-rich or chalybeate springs are frequent in the area, probably issuing from the shales of the coal measures. Their flow tends to increase in wet weather, suggesting that their sources are not very deep. There is one across the road opposite St Mary Magdalene Church and another along the footpath from the village to the stepping stones. This one seems to have been selected as an additional attraction for the Spa Walks, it is on a footpath from the hotel, along the cliff-top towards the Popping Stone, close to a footbridge where an obscure path leads off to the Butterburn Road.
