Pivot Stone

Site: Orchard House Mill, Gilsland, Cumbria (investigation)

Co-ordinates: N 54.99080 W 2.58104 (NY62926640)

Notes: Found on the bank of the River Irthing close to the presumed site of Orchard House Mill, known to have been extant in 1603. Pivot stones, the lower end of a simple door hinge, are found at sites of many historic periods. Stone approx. 27cm long, hole approx. 5cm wide and 2cm deep.
